Event Description :

Buddha Jayanti 2026 AD (Siddharth Gautam Buddha’s 2570th Birthday, he was born in Lumbini, a mid-sourthern part of Nepal on Bhaisakh Poornima – also enlightenment and passing away on the same day) – was celebrated by Tamu Samaj Victoria (Australia) community from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday 9 May 2026 at Quang Duc Buddhist Monastery (Vietnamese Community led), Fawkner. More than 150+ attendees across Victoria, inter-state and overseas came together to mark the occasion. The program was designed to cater various community needs – spirituality with prayers and reflection, Buddha teachings discourse and blessing, community gathering and well-being, free vegetarian meals and drinks, children activities, etc.

Program Schedule

Once again, we were fortunate this year to have the presence and blessing of the venerable Lingrik Nyima Lama Rinpochhe from Nepal (We would like to acknowledge the sponsor Bikram-Ratna Gurung family for Rinpochhe’s visit).  The event started by welcoming Rinpochhe into the venue hall. After his and other two lamas – TSV community resident Sanga Lama Indra Bahadur Gurung and Lama Singye Dorje – seating, the event MCs started the official program. TSV secretary Dr Arun Gurung delivered the opening remarks – formally welcoming lamas, extending Buddha Jayanti wishes, highlighting a quick overview of TSV history and activities, and applauding the young MC volunteers. The Rinpochhe led the sutra chanting (including special Tara Devi pooja for world welfare) and a discourse on the Buddhist wisdom and teachings. Then the attendees lighted 108 batti and got the blessings from lama gurus. There was a short update about TSV Cultural Centre project by Dr Mohan B Gurung encouraging TSV families to contribute as much as possible to achieve the dream of establishing Tamu identity and culture appropriate venue in Victoria.

After the free vegetarian meals and drinks prepared by TSV Mothers Team, the children activities included two engaging sessions – Ekadesh story-telling by Ms Shradda Gurung and drawing/coloring competition coordinated by Ms Nishtha Gurung.

Finally, the prize/souvenir/Dakshina distribution (Lama Gurus were bid farewell midway) and a thank you note from TSV Assistant Secretary and event coordinator Ashok Gurung ended the official program. A very special thanks goes to the venue provider – Quang Duc Buddhist Monastery, venerable Master Tang and Master Dang, for their kindness and generosity.

The event planning and delivery has been supported by TSV Mothers Team led by Mrs Aarati Ghale Gurung and Mrs Anita Gurung, TSV volunteers, young MC talents, as well as supporters and well-wishers – the TSV community is fortunate to have such supportive and dedicated volunteers. Lastly we would like to thank everyone for coming together to reflect and contribute to a more resilient strong community. As always, please feel free to reach out to executive committee for any enquiries.

Thank you
Tamu Samaj Victoria (Australia)
