Event Description :

This year’s Buddha Jayanti was organized by Tamu Samaj Victoria at Clifton park, Victoria Street, West Brunswick on Sunday 9th May 2015.

Around 70 people from Victoria gathered to celebrate the Buddha Jayanti from 10am to 2pm. A medium-size tent was used to create a temporary worship place, inside there was a Buddha Statue for praying. Beside the Statue, there was a place for “Dhup Batti” which are often a part of praying in Tamu tradition. Two Lamas (priests) were present for official praying and blessing the people.

In the morning, Lamas started the pooja and gave a pravachan on the auspicious day. Afterwards people prayed the Buddha for peace, good health and wealth. Many also prayed for the departed souls and the affected people in the recent earthquakes across Nepal.
The food and catering responsibility was divided among many volunteers. Everyone enjoyed delicious vegetarian food, snacks and drinks. Hot tea was also in demand as the afternoon weather started to get chiller.

Every year, there are some activities such as “dhori tanne”, “thelo hanne”, “gaito futaune”, face-painting, etc to create a festive mood among the attendees. This year however no such activities were organized because of the recent earthquake disasters in Nepal which have killed over 10,000 people and many hundred thousands affected.

Towards the end of the gathering, the President Pahalman Gurung gave a speech about the event, importance of having Gurung identity, keeping the tradition and culture of Tamu people, and the role of Tamu Samaj Victoria. He also mentioned about Tamu Samaj Victoria’s donation of $1000 for Earthquake victims in Nepal through NRNA Australia, and encouraged people to contribute more if possible. Arun Gurung talked about the Tamu Samaj Victoria website tamusamajvictoria.org.au, asked people to register their details and contribute to the contents.

At the end, some prominent Tamu members gathered to discuss about the “Tamu Gumba” acting as worship place and cultural centre. Some discussions have been ongoing for a while about it. An important step to form a “Gumba Committee” has been achieved. The committee includes Pahalman Gurung, Hasta Bahadur Gurung, Tej Bahadur Gurung, Som Prasad Gurung, Amrita Gurung, Kiran Gurung and Arun Gurung (Coordinator). The mandate for the committee is to come with a proposal to be submitted to Tamu Samaj Victoria’s AGM (Annual General Meeting) in July 2015.
