Event Description :

Tamu Samaj Victoria continued to celebrate its third “Tamu Culture Day 2018″ on Saturday 8th September 2018 at Harold Stevens Athletic Track, Coburg. The event has undergone various enhancements and additions based on the past feedback and discussion among the members. Nevertheless, the aim has been to get together once a year just to celebrate Tamu identity and culture. Close to hundred Tamu people of all ages gathered from across greater Melbourne region. The attendees in Gurung attire have been increasing every year.

The program started with Buddha Puja by lighting 101 candles in front of Buddha statue. Thereafter Welcome speech by TSV President Mr Pahalman Gurung, Cultural centre update by Coordinator Dr Arun Gurung, and TSV magazine update by coordinator Dr Mohan Gurung  followed. Dr Mohan Gurung also presented an overview on ‘Gurungs’, which was an excellent highlight of the event. Mr Pahalman Gurung volunteered to describe some traditional household items such as ‘Doko’, ‘Dala’, etc made up of bamboo. He also explained in details about a key Tamu tradition of ‘Syai Syai’ which is basically visiting a family at sorrow for giving encouragement and consolation, while a family with significant  achievement to celebrate and extend best wishes. There was a drawing competition for kids. In sports, “Thelo Falne” for men, “Ghaito Futaune” for women and “Musical chair” for kids were held.

One new item added to the event this year was family photos taken by our professional photographer Mr Prasad Gurung. These photos to be sold in a beautiful frame and the profit to go to Cultural centre fund.

Around 4pm, the program concluded with prize and certificate distribution, thank you speech from Coordinator Mr Prabin Gurung, acknowledgment speech from Food/drinks coordinator Mrs Nitu Gurung and finally concluding remarks from Mr Pahalman Gurung.

A long list of volunteers got involved in the planning, preparation, execution and post-event activities. It was a family event, therefore TSV committee tried to get all age groups – from young to old – involved in available volunteer opportunities. In Puja activities, Mr Rajan Gurung; Sound and projector setup, advisor Mr Ashok Gurung; Kids activities, Ms Aayesha Gurung; Thelo Falne, Vice-President Mr Tej Gurung; Ghaito Futaune, Mrs Nitu Gurung; Musical Chair, Assistant Treasurer Mr Dhan Gurung; Food/drinks, all volunteers led by Aama Toli; Photography, Mr Prasad Gurung, Membership/finance, Public officer Inder Singh Gurung and Secretary Mr Milan Gurung; MCs, Mr Dhan Gurung and Ms Choyang Gurung. And all other volunteers who extended help to make the event a memorable one.

Many thanks to the event coordinator Assistant Secretary Mr Prabin Gurung and team for organizing a successful ‘Tamu Culture Day 2018’. Without everyone’s great efforts, it would not have been this successful. Special thanks go to all the attendees many of whom despite their work and other commitment, came to participate, learn and share one or two things about Tamu culture. That itself made the program a worthwhile and important placeholder in the Tamu Samaj Victoria history page.

As always, please send your feedback or suggestions to the executive committee for consideration to make the day even better next year.

Thank you.
