Event Description :

Over 200 people including families and kids joined Tamu Samaj Victoria to celebrate 2560th birth anniversary of Gautam Buddha, pioneer of Buddhism, on 22th May 2016 at Harold Stevens Athletic Facilities, Outlook Road, Coburg North. Buddha Jayanti is a regular event organized by Tamu Samaj Victoria for several years. It aims to celebrate the birth as well as the teachings of Buddha among the attendees and pass on our culture to next generation. Several people from other communities also participated to highlight the multicultural nature of the event. The delicious vegetarian food was sponsored by Tamu Samaj Victoria volunteers, and therefore free for all attendees. Entry was free as well.

Gautam Buddha was born in Lumbini, currently located in Kapilvastu district of Nepal. By organizing this event, we also do highlight the fact that the birthplace is in Nepal, which sometimes is not correctly known overseas. Lama Guru Sanga Lama Indra Bahadur Gurung conducted the proceedings, the prayers, the highlights of Buddha’s teachings and the blessings of course. Modern day life has become too fast and somewhat reckless to pause and reflect on the good teachings and understand the truths of life. The event provided an opportunity for many to listen and absorb some good teachings of Buddha, and hopefully apply them to their daily lives in order to become more peaceful and content beings.

The day also covered many other regular activities such asĀ  Thelo Hanne, Dori Tanne, Musical chair, Ghaito Phutaune, Soccer, Face painting, Sack Race, Spoon & Marshmallows Race, etc capturing attention from all young kids to old ones. The location also served very well to organize such activities in a safe and secure place, thanks to the management of Harlod Stevens Athletic Facilities for letting us use the venue. The awards were distributed by chief guest Mr Parsu Sharma-Luital and President Mr Pahalman Gurung. Along the day, artists from Nepal Mr Milan Lama and others joined the event. They came to Australia on a musical tour, and were delighted to celebrate Buddha Jayanti with other fellow Nepalis in Victoria. Tamu Samaj Victoria’s President Mr Pahalman Gurung welcomed them by putting “Khada”. Mr Milan Lama sang few beautiful songs and extended wishes to all attendees. Many thanks to Mr Som Prasad Gurung for organizing the artists to come over to participate.

President Pahalman Gurung also gave a short speech highlighting the importance of Buddha Jayanti celebration and Tamu Samaj Victoria’s various activities throughout the year. He especially touched on our initiative to build Tamu Samaj Victoria Cultural Centre, and appealed everyone to come forward to contribute as per their capacity. Mr Arun Gurung is the coordinator of the initiative, please address your suggestion and queries to him. The President also thanked all the volunteers who made the event successful. Special thanks go to the event coordinator Mrs Maya Gurung and Mr Mabi Gurung along with all Tamu Samaj Victoria team and other volunteers.

Lastly thanks to all the Tamu Samaj Victoria members and other attendees who made the event worthwhile by participating and engaging with each other and at the same time providing your input to continue organize and improve these very important events in our culture. If interested to volunteer or contribute, you can always approach one of our friendly committee members.

Thank you.
