Event Description :

तमु ल्होछार/ल्होसार हि-ल्हो/बिरालो-वर्ग Tamu Lho-Chhar 2023 “Year of The Cat” was celebrated by Tamu Samaj Victoria (Australia) community from 3 pm to 8 pm on Friday 30 December 2022 (पुष १५) at Estonian House, 43 Melville Rd, Brunswick West, Victoria 3055. More than 500+ local community members across Melbourne, family visitors from overseas, community leaders, and sponsors got together to celebrate the biggest festival of Tamu community. Most attendees proudly showcased their best Tamu traditional attire and jewellery.

Some highlights of the day were –

  • Prayers and chanting from our own Sange Lama Inder Bahadur Gurung to bid farewell to “Year of The Tiger” and welcome new “Year of The Cat”. The attendees also received his blessings and good wishes for the new year. He also gave a short speech about the importance and belief systems around Tamu Zodiac calendar.

  • Session 1 of the program included national anthems (Nepal and Australia); a welcome speech by TSV President Mr Tej Gurung; acknowledgement and welcome to the guests by offering Khada from TSV Mothers’ group; a speech by chief guest Honorary Consul General of Nepal to Victoria Mr Chandra Yonzon; acknowledgement to sponsors – Gold Sponsors (blueberry real estate Melbourne, SOLVE Education Consultancy), Silver Sponsors (The Kathmandu Cottage, Expert Education & Visa, GRACE International Education & Migration, Better Choice Mortgage & Finance), The Himalayan Club; Felicitation to Academic achievers in calendar year (VCE and University graduates)

  • Session 2 of the program included cultural program and foods/drinks. Many local community artists (Tamu and Non-Tamu) have been practising the dances for several weeks at the venue provided by the Himalayan Club at Preston. Nine (9) group dance items which included traditional Tamu and contemporary routines had a mix of children and adult performers. All the performances were received by the audience with a great enthusiasm and applause. Moreover, there was a separate time-slot allocated for joint dance by willing attendees on the floor, it was great to see many showing their great dance moves and enjoying themselves in the spirit of New year celebration.

  • On cultural performance, TSV believes that involving children in cultural performances is one key opportunity to pass over traditional cultural knowledge to next generation. Not only the strategy has been successful, but also it gets many families involved in the lead up to the Tamu Lho-Chhar performance (choreography, practice, make-ups, volunteer, social interactions, artists management, etc).

  • The program came to end after certificate distribution to the cultural artists/volunteers and a closing remark by the TSV President.

We would like to thank for successful Lho-Chhar event delivery – event coordinator TSV Secretary Milan Gurung; MCs  Laxman Gurung and Sabina Gurung; TSV Vice-President Mabi Gurung for organising cultural artists and performances; Mothers Group for managing guests and cultural artists; Som Prasad Gurung and Dr Mohan Gurung for looking after the sponsors and social media; The Kathmandu Cottage for excellent catering, food/drinks, sound/light systems, photography; TSV Treasurers Inder Singh Gurung and Gopal Gurung along with Arun Gurung and Divya Gurung for door entry ticketing; and many more TSV volunteers without whom it would have been extremely difficult to organise such a safe, enjoyable and successful celebration.

As always, please feel free to reach out to anyone in the TSV leadership group (Executive, Board, Advisers, Mothers’ Group) for any comments/advice. We are always looking for many more volunteers to help out with TSV events and activities throughout the year.

Thank you
Tamu Samaj Victoria (Australia)
