Event Description :
The biggest festival of Tamu/Gurung community पुष १५ तमु ल्होछार/ल्होसार Tamu Lho-Chhar 2025 “Year of The Snake” was celebrated by Tamu Samaj Victoria (Australia) community from 4 pm to 9 pm on Saturday 4 January 2025 at Estonian House, 43 Melville Rd, Brunswick West, Victoria 3055. More than 500+ community members across Melbourne, family visitors from overseas, community leaders, sponsors, partners and supporters got together for Tamu/Gurung new year – to mark a change of Zodiac sign from the Eagle to the Snake. The event door entry fees were set to $10 for TSV member and $15 for non-members, which helped to deliver the event in a sustainable manner.
Some highlights of the day were –
- Prayers and new year blessing from Sange Lama Indra Bahadur Gurung to bid farewell to “Year of The Eagle” and welcome new “Year of The Snake”.
- Session 1 of the program started with MC Sabina Gurung briefing the program overview. After acknowledging the traditional landowners of Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation, national anthems (Nepal and Australia) were played. TSV secretary Dr Arun K Gurung gave an overview and current status of TSV especially about the TSV Cultural Centre project which is led by Dr Mohan B Gurung. TSV President Tej Gurung delivered a welcome speech and officially opened the program, and welcomed the invited guests (community leaders, VMC, Merri-bek Council) by offering Khada. The deputy mayor Cr Helen Politis took on stage to offer Tamu LhoChhar best wishes and Merri-bek council’s support program for communities like TSV. The chief guest Ms Vivienne Nguyen, Tej Gurung and TSV Magazine editor Dr Mohan B Gurung joined her on stage to launch the TSV magazine 2025 [Vol. 6]. Following the speech by chief guest Ms Nguyen, we congratulated the academic achievers in calendar year 2024 (VCE graduates got $50 gift vouchers and University/TAFE graduates).
- Session 2 of the program included stage cultural performances with great dance routines. Many young members within the TSV community as well as from outside have been practicing over several weeks to put up a great show, well done to them and parents/guardians. The session was managed by a MC duo – Mohini Gurung and Merina Gurung. There were 11 dance items which included a mix of traditional Tamu/Gurung and contemporary Nepali songs. All the performances were received with a great enthusiasm and applause – one routine from a pair of talented young boy and girl was so good that it was performed twice after the huge request from the audience.
- TSV also acknowledged the business sponsors for their financial support –
- Gold Sponsor (The Kathmandu Cottage),
- Silver Sponsors (Aalora Care, Red Panda Finance),
- Bronze Sponsors (Mantra Plumbing and Gas, Nest or Invest Buyers Agent, Destiny Finance and Home Loans, JAVA Energy, Acclaim Conveyancing, Blush Creatives); Blush Creatives for a beautiful red carpet photography decoration;
- SBS Nepali (Ms Dinita Rishal) for a good coverage on the day.
- Felicitation of 8 newest TSV life family members who have contributed in excess of $5000. There are now 11 TSV life family members.
- Session 3 had a certificate distribution to the cultural artists/volunteers and a closing remark by the TSV President. During the after program session, we all danced together in various remix songs, everyone had a great time celebrating Tamu LhoChhar.
