Event Description :

TSV has successfully organized the “TSV Career Information Session 2021” on Sunday 19th September 2021. It was a part of one activity under the Assess & Act Project of Tamu Samaj Victoria (TSV),  supported by the Victorian Government through the Priority Response to Multicultural Communities during Coronavirus (PRMC) program.

The session started with Arun Gurung welcoming all the attendees not only from Victoria but also inter-state and overseas. After a quick note on house-keeping rules, he gave an overview of Tamu Samaj Victoria history and its activities. This year TSV is marking 20th Anniversary since its establishment in 2001 when just few Tamu families gathered to celebrate Tamu Lho-Chhar (New Year). Afterwards, Dr Mohan Gurung, Assess & Act Project Leader, talked about the project briefly, and acknowledged the funding received from the Victoria State Government. Then it was guest speakers turn to take the centre stage one by one. The allocated time of 1:15hrs was not enough, so by the time all the speakers finished talking it was well past 2:15 pm (after 2 hrs). Therefore we need to skip the planned Q&A section. The conclusion was short with Arun Gurung summarizing the session and a vote of Thanks from TSV President Tej Gurung. After a final group photo (all the attendees turning on the video) moment, we bid each other farewell to close the session.

All of 9 volunteer guest speakers spoke well to share their working experiences and insights in Australia across a number of careers and industries. The guest speakers were – Min Prasad Gurung in Education/Teaching, Dr Parbati Gurung in Medical, Sagun Gurung in IT/Engineering, Hari Gurung in Hospitality (Food), Maya Gurung in Nursing, Dhan Gurung in Defence (Army), Milan Gurung in Manufacturing (Food Processing), Dipu Gurung in Accounting, and Inder Gurung in Agriculture/Farming.

Few highlights were – Min Prasad Gurung emphasizing the need of continuous learning and networking; Dr Parbati Gurung benefits of being in medical profession; Sagun Gurung stressing to stand out and differentiate; Hari Gurung being in love of what you do; Maya Gurung on excellent opportunities in Nursing career in terms of challenges and rewards; Dhan Gurung speaking how to never give up, pursue career in Defence eventually; Milan Gurung on importance of cultural and legal awareness among migrant workers; Dipu Gurung sharing examples how to get through in a competitive accounting landscape; and finally Inder Gurung on experience and opportunities in Australian agriculture/farming sector for seasonal/short-term stints.

The attendees ranged from high-schoolers (teenagers) with their parents to young (<30 years old) ones. Few more joined to listen to the experiences from the other industries. There was a total of 81 email registrations, up to 50 attendees were online (some with other family members) during the session. It was deemed highly successful in terms of participants and usefulness as the event was first of its kind organized in TSV history. We hope that all the attendees have benefited by listening and having the mentoring/guidance opportunities with TSV acting as a middle person to link-up to proper volunteers in their respective industries. The objective of working knowledge transfer and sharing to make TSV community become more resilient in these testing times due to COVID-19 has been achieved somewhat. More of similar type of TSV programs will  continue in future.

Towards the end, we also got 5 lucky draw prize winners in terms of registration serial numbers – 5, 11, 37, 51 and 56.  The winners are Min Gurung, Sagun Gurung, Dhan Gurung, Bikram Gurung and Sharmila Gurung. They each will receive a free annual TSV membership worth $20. Congratulations!

Finally, we would like to thank Arun Gurung and Saugat Gurung for successfully organizing the session. Special thanks go to all our 9 guest speakers for taking time and courage to share their personal stories with wider TSV community. Also thank you to Dr Mohan Gurung (Project Leader), Mohini Gurung (TSV Secretary), Tej Gurung (TSV President) and all the TSV leadership team (Executives, Advisors, Board Members, Ama Group) for behind the scene support. We need to thank all the registered attendees who sought to listen and learn to further develop themselves, thereby contributing to make TSV community stronger and more resilient. They are encouraged to seek further mentoring/guidance with our expert and experienced professionals.
